Season 13, Episode 12
A Blooming Mess
Written by Miranda Larson

Well, this was a while coming. Why did I not review this earlier? A few reasons: worse episodes to get rid of, RWS reviews, and real life school work. So, without further delay or confusion, let's get to A Blooming Mess!

Knapford station is being redecorated... actually, that's a good way to start the episode; it builds up to the plot. The Fat Controller sends Thomas to collect slate for a new roof while Emily collects flowers for the window boxes. I didn't know Emily was geeky about flowers. :P That's not a criticism, by the way - I do find it actually funny. After passing Toby and James with their loads to Knapford, Emily encounters Mavis and says hello to her, but Mavis doesn't respond. (Why Emily didn't whistle, I don't know either.) Emily believes Mavis is upset, and decides to bring her flowers to brighten up the quarry.

At the quarry, Mavis is nowhere to be seen, and so Emily leaves a flatbed that Mavis can see as soon as she arrives, but Edward runs into them with a truck. By the way, how he said "Pardon?" was actually funny too. Anyway, Emily leaves flowers near the hopper, but Thomas runs into that and Edward, resulting in a mess. Isn't it funny how it happens off-screen and we only see the aftermath? I think so too.

By coincidence, Mavis shows up and isn't pleased with the mess, but she tells Emily that she had been thinking about all of her jobs. (On a sidenote, asking people as to what makes them happy is a nice thing to do if you want to help them out, if they need it, of course.) What does make Mavis happy is if the quarry is tidy and that the engines are hard at work, and so Emily takes Thomas to the coal hopper because his fire has gone out (odd that a minor accident like that would do so) and takes away the flatbeds so Edward can fill up his truck. Emily then takes the flowers to Knapford station where they belong, and all of them are unloaded to make the station look beautiful.

Looks like Miranda Larson is another contender for the Larson effect - she's also written Time for a Story in this season, and my God, was that a horrible episode. She's also written Pingy Pongy Pick Up and Merry Winter Wish in season 14 - how is it she was able to write decent plots for Emily but not for Thomas?

As for A Blooming Mess, I like how Emily has made a return to her original season seven personality, even though there were some bumps here and there. And yes, there is the issue with her not doing her job first, but if she had, then there'd be no story. Despite the flaws I picked out and several more besides, I say this is a decent watch, and one of the better episodes from season 13 (could be personal bias :P) Now that I think about it, why didn't I consider this for the Top 25 Miller Era Episodes list in the first place?
